DON'T MISS

As schools break for the summer lots of us will be looking forward to a well-deserved holiday. It’s a busy time of the year for airports as people flock to take what for many will be their one trip of the year. But there’s a problem — a very small percentage of the UK population are taking at least six times that many flights every year! These ultra frequent flyers are using up more than their fair share of the carbon budget. We believe the government should introduce a frequent flyer levy, to protect the planet and make flying fairer for all. Read on to find out about our latest research on frequent flyers and to see my colleague Alex Chapman make the case for a frequent flyer in parliament.

Medium-hall flights are soaring — and it’s a problem for the planet
NEF analysis found the average mileage of an international flight departing the UK has increased about 60 miles since 2019. Alex Chapman explains why that’s a problem and what we should do about it.

As Europe burns, can the ECB turn words into action on green policy?
The European Central Bank’s updated strategy reaffirms its support for climate policy, but it has a mixed track record when it comes to concrete actions, writes Theo Harris.

A coordinated macroeconomic framework for Europe
From war to the climate crisis, Europe is in an age of economic shocks. A new briefing from NEF sets out why we need greater monetary-fiscal coordination to respond to these challenges.

The development model in practice
Brownfield sites can be part of the solution to the housing crisis — but the current development model prioritises developer’s profits over what communities need. This NEF report sets out an alternative.
