Since coming to power, the government has approved expansions at Gatwick, London City, and Luton airports, and they are bending over backwards to get Heathrow’s third runway off the ground.

This extraordinary level of backing for increased air travel capacity will have gone down well with Heathrow’s owners in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and Gatwick’s owners in France and the US. But whether this should be celebrated as an economic success story for UK communities is highly questionable.”
