We’re recruiting an experienced, creative, self-sufficient campaigns communications officer to work on our Reclaiming Our Regional Economies (RORE) programme, to work with community members to develop a powerful, resonant public narrative, microsite, and other digital content as part of a regional housing campaign.

This is a 12 day contract at £400 per day to start immediately.

The consultant will be required to travel to Sheffield. Travel costs will be provided.

This consultancy will be managed by Frances Northrop, Head of Community Economic Power at the New Economics Foundation.

About the RORE Partnership
Reclaiming our Regional Economics (RORE) programme, coordinated in partnership between four not-for-profit organisations, New Economics Foundation (NEF), the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES), Co-operatives UK and Centre for Thriving Places (CTP).

About Powerful South Yorkshire
In South Yorkshire we are building a collective of people and community groups from across Doncaster, Barnsley, Sheffield and Rotherham, including some of the most neglected parts of our region. People in these communities are watching as our country lurches from one crisis to the next. They can’t access the things they need for a decent life, whether this is healthcare, a warm home, or enough money to feed their kids.

And people often don’t have the power, hope or control they need to fix these problems. More and more people are feeling increasingly shut out from politics. This is driving hopelessness, division and despair.

Many people in South Yorkshire have a very proud legacy of standing up and fighting for their community. By working together, we believe we can build the power between us to tackle some of the problems that are making South Yorkshire so unequal and making so many people feel hopeless. We want to build a collective which can fight lots of different campaigns, but we think the first campaign is going to be around people living in damp, badly managed private rented sector homes.

The role

We’re looking for an experienced communications specialist, with a background in creating websites and social media content for charity or justice campaigns.

The areas of responsibility will include:

  • Lead the development of a six month communications strategy to raise the public and political profile of Powerful South Yorkshire’s housing campaign and our economic narrative. From this:
    • Develop a simple microsite for Powerful South Yorkshire.

    • Create, update and write content for webpages with support from PSY members.

    • Develop practical how-tos and templates, together with partners

    • Review and update this based on relevant impact data at the end of the partnership

  • Advise us how to best use a campaign messaging guide that we are developing as part of our wider work to develop and promote digital campaign content, including videos and social media content.

Essential experience

  • Experience of designing communications strategy for justice campaigns.

  • Experience of basic website design.

  • Experience of creating digital campaign content for websites and social media platforms to drive popular support for campaigns.

Essential skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • The ability to communicate sensitively and diplomatically with people who have different backgrounds, beliefs and experiences to your own.

  • A deep commitment to social justice, and addressing unequal power and privilege across intersecting systems of oppression.

  • A basic understanding of economic inequality, and how the economy is designed to drive inequality in wealth and housing.

  • Creative problem-solving skills.

  • The ability to self-motivate and work with limited supervision.

Desirable

  • Familiar with message framing for campaigns or the Race/Class Narrative (see NEON, Race Class Narrative, PIRC, Words to Win By).

  • Experience working with grassroots community groups and/or people directly impacted by campaign issues.

  • Familiar with new economy models and how financial extraction works.

Deadline 22 April at 12pm.
