Coronavirus struck after a decade of austerity. This was itself a response to the last major economic crisis of 2008. This time round, we are witnessing public services barely able to cope with the crisis. At the same time, the government is promising billions in support for businesses impacted by the pandemic.
What has been the impact of austerity on our ability to respond to coronavirus? Will the government’s current response lead to demands for further austerity? And how should we pay for recovery?
