The New Economics Foundation’s Board of Trustees has appointed Adam Sharples as its new chair following an extensive search to replace former chair Lord Bob Kerslake who passed away in July last year.
Adam is a former civil service Director General and has been involved in policy making throughout his working life. Adam began his career as an economist before becoming head of research for the National Union of Public Employees. He also worked within government as a senior civil servant in the Treasury and DWP for nearly 25 years.
More recently, Adam has held several chair and non-executive positions, including Chair of the Money Advice Trust from 2016 to 2023, and Vice Chair of the Barts Health NHS Trust since 2022.
Adam Sharples, the incoming chair of trustees at NEF, said:
“I am honoured and delighted to be joining the New Economics Foundation as chair, particularly at a time when there is such a need for new economic thinking informed by progressive values and sound evidence.
“The next few years will be a pivotal moment for the UK which will require bold ideas and engagement with communities across the country to tackle the multiple challenges we face and ensure a healthy, thriving economy and environment that work for everybody.”
Keren Jones, who has acted as interim chair of trustees since July last year, said:
“I am delighted Adam has been appointed to take over from our wonderful chair, Lord Bob Kerslake who sadly passed away last year.
“Adam is an experienced chair and has an in-depth knowledge of the policy issues NEF works on, gained from his time working with trade unions, as a senior official in government and more recently with organisations in the health and charity sectors.
“Adam is committed to social justice and inclusion and will help us continue to deliver tangible impacts as a charity.”
