Prime minister needs bolder economics to deliver on ambitions

New Economics Foundation reacts to Keir Starmer’s speech

The government needs to adopt a bolder economic approach and free itself from its fiscal straight jacket if it is to deliver a fairer economy for all, the New Economics Foundation (NEF) has said in response to the prime minister’s speech today at Labour Party Conference.

NEF chief executive Danny Sriskandarajah said:

It was good to hear the prime minister focus on delivering a fairer economy for all, and the importance of a muscular state’ with adequate public investment.

But if he is serious about renewal, then we cannot wait on growth that may never come. The government needs to free itself from its fiscal straight jacket that allows small changes in forecasting to determine how many children go hungry at night.

Thriving public services, financial support for those who need it, and a swift path to a low-carbon economy will all require a bolder approach to economic policies — and it is disappointing that this government doesn’t seem ready to do that.”
