Overview: Despite the effects of the climate crisis being all around us, the consensus on net zero appears to be wilting again. In the wake of this fracturing consensus, we need to take a look at the factors driving this political paralysis, the consequences for people and planet, and the big ideas that can help reignite support for a green economy.

The New Economics Foundation is organising a drinks reception at the Green Party conference to celebrate our shared history and highlight the need for a fast and fair transition towards an economy that operates within planetary boundaries while working for all. There will be some short remarks from representatives of the Green Party of England and Wales about the dire need to create an economy that works for people and planet.

Overview: Everyone deserves an affordable, sustainable and decent home. This is not a privilege, it is a fundamental human right. And yet across Europe, people are facing a deep housing crisis, struggling to pay their bills whilst speculators buy up entire buildings and landlords evict their tenants on a whim. Families are being forced to spend almost half their income just to keep a roof over their heads1, while millions of young people are locked out of the housing market altogether. Since 2010, house prices in the EU have risen by 55.4% and rents by 26.7%2. In many cities prices are increasing 10 – 20% annually, completely outpacing wages and inflation3. Homelessness is on the rise. On any given night, 1.3 million people in the EU have no shelter, almost 400,000 of them children.
