Burnham’s diagnosis of the last 40 years is spot on

The New Economics Foundation (NEF) has reacted to the prime minister’s Labour party conference speech.

NEF chief executive, Danny Sriskandarajah, said:

“At the New Economics Foundation, we’ve been waiting 40 years for a prime minister to say we need to ​‘build a new economy’. Andy Burnham’s diagnosis of the mistakes of the last four decade – privatisation, deindustrialisation and losing control of our essentials – was spot on.

“Yet, as inspiring as today’s speech was, the real test will be whether the chancellor can keep pace with Burnham’s ambition in next month’s budget. That means being unafraid raise resources by tackling the glaring inequalities in our tax system, where wealth and windfall profits are privileged at the expense of working people.”
